Mirror Hours
Mirror hours are the moment someone glances at a clock and finds the same two digits twice — 08:08, 11:11, 22:22 — and the tradition treats each of the twelve as a message of its own. This page sets out what each one reduces to, where practitioners disagree about the arithmetic, and what the clock adds that a bare sequence does not.

The arithmetic: four digits, then the left half
The procedure has two steps. Add the four digits and reduce the total to one place: 16:16 gives 1+6+1+6 = 14, and 14 becomes 5. Then add the left half alone, which is identical to the right: 1+6 = 7. Every mirror hour therefore leaves the calculation carrying two figures, and the reading works from the pair, not from either one by itself.
One property of that arrangement is rarely stated. Because the halves are identical, the four-digit total is always exactly twice the half, before any reduction. Reduction hides it — at 16:16 the half is 7 and the total is 5 — but one figure still fixes the other: half 1 gives 2, half 5 gives 1, half 8 gives 7, half 9 gives 9, and each digit from 1 to 9 appears once in that correspondence.
09:09 is the only one of the twelve where both values land on the same digit, 9, since nine is the one figure that survives doubling and reduction unchanged. That is worth knowing before you compare two sources quoting different numbers for one and the same time.
Times that arrive at the same pair
Three pairs among the twelve are arithmetically identical. 08:08 and 17:17 both carry half 8 and total 7; 12:12 and 21:21 carry half 3 and total 6; 14:14 and 23:23 carry half 5 and total 1. The reason shows in the halves: 08 and 17 sum to the same digit, and so do 12 and 21, and 14 and 23.
Nothing in the sum separates the members of a pair, so the clock reading adds what the digits do not carry: the hour of the day, and the order the digits stand in. 08:08 is read as the opening of a working day and 17:17 as its close; at 12:12 the first move is assigned to the person watching, at 21:21 to someone else. Conventions, not results.

11:11 and 22:22: where the schools disagree
Two of the twelve have a disputed sum. At 11:11 the half can be added, 1+1 = 2, or kept as 11, which part of the tradition treats as a figure in its own right and refuses to reduce. At 22:22 the choice is between 4 and 22. Neither convention can be shown to be the correct one, and both have been in print for decades.
The practical consequence is that two sources can publish different numbers for the same time without either having added wrongly, so check which convention a text follows before setting its reading against another. A second disagreement goes deeper than arithmetic. Part of the French tradition the term comes from reads a mirror hour through no sum at all, but through a table in which each twenty-minute slice of the day carries one of seventy-two named angels. Digit reduction and the angel table sit side by side in the same books, and they do not always agree.
How many of the twelve your clock can show
A twelve-hour display holds only three of these times — 10:10, 11:11 and 12:12 — and shows each of them twice a day. A twenty-four-hour display holds all twelve and shows each once, for sixty seconds. Because twelve-hour is the default format on phones set to US English, the family looks much smaller from there than it does where the term was coined.
Twelve minutes out of 1,440 is one minute in a hundred and twenty. Someone who checks a clock a few dozen times a day will land on one of them every few days with nothing unusual having happened. The tradition does not argue with that count; it moves the content onto the thought the glance interrupted.
The English name is a calque of the French heures miroir, and the French list is longer than this one: it counts every time whose minutes repeat its hour, 01:01 and 13:13 included, and keeps a separate class for reversed hours, where the minute is the hour backwards — 12:21, 21:12. - What does it mean if I keep seeing the same time?
- Most often it means you look at a clock at the same point in your routine: before lunch, at the end of a shift, before sleep. The tradition does not treat repetition as escalation.
