Name Numerology

Name numerology turns each letter of a written name into a figure and draws three numbers from the same letters: Expression from all of them, Soul Urge from the vowels, Personality from the consonants.

No email at this step — the number appears right here.

Choose a number:

One name, three cuts

The input here is a written name and nothing else — no time, no place, and the date you enter does not touch these three numbers. Expression adds every letter. Soul Urge adds only the vowels. Personality adds only the consonants. Three slices of one word, so three different figures is the ordinary result rather than a fault.

The tradition gives each slice its own question. Expression is read as the outward manner — what colleagues name first about how someone takes work on. Soul Urge is what a person turns to when nothing is being asked of them. Personality is the first impression, the part that enters the room ahead of any sentence. A gap between the three is treated as ordinary distance, not as a contradiction to resolve.

The Pythagorean chart, letter by letter

Each letter takes the number of its place in the alphabet reduced to one figure: A to I run 1 to 9, J to R run 1 to 9 again, S to Z run 1 to 8. So J is 1, S is 1, and the strip under the result shows the value beside every letter, which is how the sum can be checked rather than trusted.

Vowels are A, E, I, O and U. Y is the argument: some schools count it as a vowel when it carries the vowel sound — Lynn, Bryn — and as a consonant otherwise, others fix it in one column and leave it there. This calculator does not switch it per word, so a name whose Y does the work of a vowel is one the two schools will read differently, and that is worth knowing before comparing with another site.

Which name to type

The method counts letters, so the spelling is the whole question. A passport name and the name people actually use are two different sets of letters and two honest answers. The commoner reading takes the name in use, on the argument that it is the one doing the work between people.

A married surname leaves two names in circulation at once, one on documents and one everywhere else; there is no true and false here, there are two numbers. Hyphens and apostrophes carry no value in the chart and are removed before the count, so O'Brien and Jean-Pierre are counted as OBrien and Jean Pierre. Diacritics fold to their base letter — José counts as Jose.

What the three numbers cannot tell apart

Identical spelling gives identical numbers. Every Maria on this page gets the same Expression, the same Soul Urge and the same Personality, and there are a great many of them. A number that cannot separate two people is not a portrait of one, and saying so does not take the reading away — it says what it is made of.

The page also does not state what will happen, and does not advise on work, money or health. What the tradition offers is vocabulary, with the cost of each trait next to the trait. Changing the spelling changes the number, which is exactly why the tradition treats a change of name as worth reading.

Frequently asked

Full legal name or the name people call me?
Both are valid and give different numbers, because they are different sets of letters. The commoner reading takes the name in use. If both are in circulation, run both — it is one retype.
Do middle names and surnames go into the sum?
Everything you type is counted. A multi-word name is reduced word by word: each word comes down to a figure and the figures are added. A full name and a first name alone give different answers, and the tradition names neither as the master one.
Is Y a vowel here?
It is kept in one column rather than switched per word. Schools that move it by sound will read names like Lynn or Bryn differently, so a difference against another calculator on such a name is usually about Y rather than about the arithmetic.
What happens to accents, hyphens and apostrophes?
Accented letters fold to their base letter, so José counts as Jose. Hyphens and apostrophes carry no value in the chart and are removed before the count. The letter strip shows exactly what was counted.
Why does another site give my name a different number?
Usually because it uses a different chart. The Chaldean chart assigns one to eight and never nine, and is common in business-name readings; this page uses the Pythagorean chart. Different charts, same arithmetic.
Why is a date of birth asked for?
The calculation is not sent without one, so the field is required. It does not affect the three name numbers — the same name with any date gives the same Expression, Soul Urge and Personality.
