Greek Kyrillos comes from kyrios, lord or master. English inherited it as Cyril, through Latin and the church, centuries before it ever met a Russian speaker; Kirill is the Russian spelling put into Latin letters, and Ukrainian passports give a third form, Kyrylo. The name belongs to the monk who took it shortly before his death and after whom the Cyrillic alphabet is named — though the script he actually devised was Glagolitic, and Cyrillic came later, from his pupils.
